December 2009
November 2009
- 9-12 November 2009, Seatle, Washington, USA
2009 American Water Resources Association Spring Specialty Conference
- Public and scientific awareness of changing climate conditions is increasing each year. These changes represent themselves in many ways: more frequent and extreme weather events, droughts in the southeastern and western states, potential for increasing flooding and coastal erosion damage, increasing irrigation and depletion of aquifers, and melting permafrost and reductions in arctic sea ice in Alaska. Understanding these changes and related management challenges is an increased focus for water resources professionals. Sustaining current communities, while allowing for continued economic development will require continued advancements in water-resource understanding, conservation, water-use practices, and improved management approaches. Education across all levels will be needed to move communities forward to help develop and implement sustainable water-resources development.

8th International Carbon Dioxide Conference
- Since the beginning of direct high-precision atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements on Mauna Loa and the South Pole more than 50 years ago, scientific interest into the study of the global carbon cycle and its perturbations by man and climate has increased almost exponentially. The recognition by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of carbon dioxide as a major driver behind the current and future warming of the world climate and the subsequent establishment of international initiatives to curb carbon dioxide emissions, such as the Kyoto protocol, has further greatly intensified global carbon cycle research. Since 1981 the worldwide scientific community meets every four years at an international conference for an exchange of the latest knowledge and to gain a better understanding on the multitude of interdisciplinary aspects of the global carbon cycle. For more information: Conference Chair Dr. Martin Heimann, martin.heimann@bcg-jena.mpg.de, Max-Planck Institut fur Biogeochemie, Hans-Kn ll Strasse 10, Jena 07745, Germany, +49.3641.35.33.27.01.

April 2009
- 2-3 April 2009, Rockford, Illinois, USA
Geological Society of America (GSA) North-Central Section 43rd Annual Meeting
- Welcome to North-Central GSA 2009. It has been 24 years since Northern Illinois University (NIU) hosted a regional GSA meeting, so it’s about time! The previous meeting, in 1985, was at the NIU main campus in DeKalb. It is not feasible to hold the 2009 meeting in DeKalb, but we think you will find Rockford a conveniently located, attractive venue with good hotels and restaurants (and an excellent brewpub). Of particular interest to conference participants are the Burpee Museum of Natural History (where the meeting buffet will be held on Thursday evening) and the newly opened Center for the Sciences in nearby Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin, USA. Also, the NIU faculty will be delighted if some of you take a couple of hours to visit the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences in DeKalb while you are at the meeting or on Saturday as you leave. For more inoformation: Technical Program Co-Chairs: James Walker, t60jaw1@wpo.cso.niu.edu, +1-815-753-7936, and Douglas Walker, ddwalker@uiuc.edu , + -217-333-1724.
