Learning Centers and Programs
- The Academy of Natural Sciences' Estuarine Research Center (ANSERC)
- ANSERC is a private, non-profit research laboratory dedicated to increasing our understanding of marine and coastal ecosystems, and how they are affected by human activities. Coastal ecosystems, which represent an immeasurably valuable resource to the nation for activities ranging from recreation and tourism to commercial fishing and transportation, are complex and fragile and increasingly threatened by the rapid increase in the size of human populations living at, or close to, the coast.
- Earthworks Workshop: Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
- Earthworks is an innovative teachers' program that includes field work and observations, problem-based learning, and practice with a variety of teaching and learning techniques. We emphasize place-based environmental education -- we teach and learn science through studying the world around us. Earthworks is a annual, one-week workshop that provides an opportunity for teachers to investigate Earth Systems Science at the local level through the interconnections between the geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere.
- NPS Learning Centers
- The National Park Service has a variety of Research Learning Centers with facilities and programs that can help you bring cutting edge research to your classroom. The Learning Centers can help create an ideal platform that can contribute to a multi-disciplinary and multi-media curriculum for diverse populations.
- Wash Woods Environmental Education Center
- Located directly on the Chesapeake Bay, the center offers a myriad of possibilities for ecological studies. The center offers a unique environment for students of all ages to engage in a variety of educational activities and can accommodate day visitors or 20 people overnight. This pristine barrier spit location allows visitors to examine a relatively undisturbed coastal environment, including shoreline, dune, interdunal swale, maritime oak-pine forest and marsh habitats.
